Why “Best-Kept Secret” Is the Worst Compliment Your Organization Can Earn

August 3, 2026

If your customers love you but no one else has heard of you, you don’t have a marketing problem — you have a storytelling problem.

Leaders often hear “best-kept secret” as praise. In practice, it means your good work is invisible outside the people who already know you. The fix is not louder marketing. It is clearer stories: what changed, who benefited, and why it matters beyond your walls.

Start with one story you already have — a client outcome, a volunteer moment, a milestone your team almost forgot to mention. Shape it for a specific audience, place it where that audience already pays attention, and repeat the process until “best-kept secret” is no longer part of your reputation.
